Mental health treatment is lifesaving, yet disparities exist in who has access to safe, high-quality care. Healthcare disparities are costly, contributing to premature death, excessive medical costs, lost productivity, and decreased quality of life. Black and Latine communities are most significantly harmed and burdened by these disparities, as well as our American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and Asian communities. These disparities pose moral and ethical dilemmas for our society, the healthcare system, and our work as health providers.

By advancing health equity and reducing these disparities, we promote a system where everyone has an opportunity to achieve optimal health. To do so, we must build focused and ongoing societal partnerships, and address injustices and the gaps we see in care across marginalized racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. Accrediting organizations and other agencies’ frameworks for advancing health equity can be resources for strategizing data collection and analysis, planning, including leadership, assessing clients’ needs, and engaging with stakeholders and community members.

This workshop will discuss how we can advance health equity, a key quality and safety issue in mental health care, through collaborative, culturally sensitive, and data-informed systemic interventions. Together, we will think about how we address health disparities as a collective, how to raise these questions when referring to higher levels of care, and how we can strengthen the spirit of health equity in community settings.
