More youth than ever are overdosing on illicit substances. Adolescence is a transitional stage generally occurs during the period from puberty to adulthood. It offers opportunity for growth in aptitude, independence, self-respect and relationship, but simultaneous there are associated great risks. Drug abuse is one of the alarming risk among adolescents. Drug abuse is a multifarious observable fact, which has diverse social, cultural, biological, environmental and financial aspects. Substance use during adolescence is particularly dangerous because psychoactive substances, including nicotine, cannabis, and alcohol, can interfere with healthy brain development. If you add in the fact that the youth has adverse childhood experiences, and is in foster care then the number of substance misuse and abuse cases significantly rises. However, the number one predictor of a resilient person is having an adult/someone who is there for them. By debunking the real/perceived benefits of substance use and abuse for youth and creating a sense of belonging, as well as helping them focus on building positive qualities and strengths, we are able to reduce the risks.

Instructor: Shameka Garner, LCCA, MA, CCTS
Shameka is a native of Mississippi, the oldest of 4 girls, wife to a Major in the Army, and mom to Eric (15 years old) and Erin (2 years old). Her hobbies include listening to music, writing, singing, playing basketball, interior design and styling, and watching her favorite TV shows.
Shameka holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in counseling. She is a Licensed STRTP Administration for the state of California and a Child Care Administrator (LCCA) for the state of Texas and currently holds the title of Licensed Administrator of Short Term Residential Treatment Programs.
Her experience includes program operations and staff development as a Trainer and Administrator over General Residential Operations (GROs), Residential Treatment Centers (RTCs), and Short Term residential treatment Programs providing intensive treatment for foster care, juvenile probation, and adoptive youth as well as training foster parents, staff, and the community at large in crisis intervention techniques, utilizing behavioral modification for high-risk high school students, developmental therapy and early intervention services for children, and working with and providing treatment for domestic violence offenders. She has worked in a variety of settings to include secure treatment facilities, inpatient and outpatient treatment, schools, and the community. She has worked with a diverse population of children, youth, and adults with the goal of overall wellness. She has a proven record of improving efficiency, productivity, and program delivery through restructuring resources to achieve goals set by executive leadership. She leads by example and loves working with staff.
Shameka is highly passionate about serving. She believes that through teaching, coaching, training, and mentoring she will build the necessary confidence in children, youth, and staff as well as empower staff as they together aid those in our care to increase their whole being. Healing is a continual process, and she values seeing AND being a part of the growth of others. Her philosophy is “Give yourself grace. We are always learning and evolving. Pace yourself and reflect along the way”.

CE Certificates: Upon course survey completion, participants will be awarded CE certificates.
Refund/Cancelation Policy: All requests for cancellation and refunds must be submitted in writing to bromero@catalyst-center.org prior to the course date. Otherwise, no refunds will be allowed.
- Refunds must be requested within 7 days of purchase.
- Refunds will not be granted for courses that have been started/accessed.
- A $10 administrative fee is deducted from approved refunds.
- Credit will be granted for alternative/future course registration.
