This course qualifies for CAMFT. Training Summary and Educational Goals: The goal of this training is for participants to distinguish among some of the most commonly used and widely researched trauma-informed and trauma-focused interventions in working with children/adolescent clients who present with acute, chronic, or complex trauma. The training will primarily expand and strengthen the participants’ clinical skills on telehealth adaptations of trauma-focused and trauma-informed interventions in working with children and adolescent clients. The training will also increase the participants’ competencies in integrating telehealth adaptations of some culturally-adapted trauma-focused interventions in their clinical work with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) children/adolescent clients. Finally, the training will culminate in the participants’ development of a tentative plan on how to implement trauma-focused telehealth tools in their individual clinical practice and/or behavioral health programs. Dr. Rubio has worked as a clinical child psychologist, play and expressive arts therapist, researcher-storyteller, program evaluator, statistical consultant, data analyst, telehealth trainer/consultant, and associate professor/lecturer in a variety of clinical and academic settings including public health systems, universities, pediatric hospitals, community mental health settings, schools, and research institutes in three countries: the Philippines, U.S.A., and New Zealand. He is currently the Director of Practice Improvement and Analytics of the Children, Youth, and Families System of Care at the San Francisco Department of Public Health in California, USA. In that role, he plans and coordinates a clinical practice improvement and evaluation program focused on identifying best trauma-informed and diversity-responsive practices; and utilizing implementation science to design and strengthen clinical assessment and interventions. His clinical work was/is primarily with immigrant and multicultural children/youth and their families. He mostly integrates psychodynamic, attachment, family systems, multicultural, expressive arts, play therapy, and CBT orientations. --- Other Important Information: Accommodations: To request additional assistance or accommodations, please contact Brisa Romero, Training Assistant, at bromero@catalyst-center.org. This course qualifies for GH CEUs. More youth than ever are overdosing on illicit substances. Adolescence is a transitional stage generally occurs during the period from puberty to adulthood. It offers opportunity for growth in aptitude, independence, self-respect and relationship, but simultaneous there are associated great risks. Drug abuse is one of the alarming risk among adolescents. Drug abuse is a multifarious observable fact, which has diverse social, cultural, biological, environmental and financial aspects. Substance use during adolescence is particularly dangerous because psychoactive substances, including nicotine, cannabis, and alcohol, can interfere with healthy brain development. If you add in the fact that the youth has adverse childhood experiences, and is in foster care then the number of substance misuse and abuse cases significantly rises. However, the number one predictor of a resilient person is having an adult/someone who is there for them. By debunking the real/perceived benefits of substance use and abuse for youth and creating a sense of belonging, as well as helping them focus on building positive qualities and strengths, we are able to reduce the risks. --- Instructor: Shameka Garner, LCCA, MA, CCTS Shameka is a native of Mississippi, the oldest of 4 girls, wife to a Major in the Army, and mom to Eric (15 years old) and Erin (2 years old).
